China’s southern region has long produced the greatest share of the country’s rice supply, so it is unsurprising that rice breeding programs first emerged in the south. First developed in 1956, a rice dwarf variety introduced in China was bred to support heavier grain yield and to mature earlier than normal (Athwal, 1971). Dwarf varieties were bred for responsiveness to fertilizer applications, which helped to boost plant growth. The widespread planting of these varieties, along with improvements in irrigation, helped to usher in a wave of yield gains in China that coincided with the Green Revolution.
